Some neighborhoods don't get good taxi traffic, and certain times of day are notoriously hard for cab-seekers to score a ride.

The taxi industry — $31 billion a year in the U.S. And Europe — is ripe for innovation, especially as cities become more densely populated, and these services need to transport more people. More than 60% of people in London, Moscow and New York City ride in a taxi at least once a month, and of the 1 million cars in Manhattan, 60,000 are taxis.

But two companies are reinventing the city schlepping experience, albeit in different ways. The current systems will soon be obsolete, thanks to your smartphone.

Below, we outline two buzzy city transport options sure to make city living a little more convenient. GetTaxi Serial entrepreneur Shahar Waiser launched in 2010. It's now in Israel, London, Moscow and, with $30 million in funding fueling its growth. GetTaxi provides users an easy-to-use interface for digitally ordering a cab via smartphone or desktop computer. Once an order is made, a cab driver using GetTaxi — the app is seamlessly integrated into the city's cab service — receives a notification that a potentially passenger is waiting at a certain location. Then, the driver simply turns a few corners to pick that person up.

Meanwhile, the smartphone user can watch as her taxi (and the identity of the driver) finds its way to her location via GPS tracking, much like you can follow your. Payment is also handled within the app, as users sync their credit cards to streamline the fare process.

'After the last two years, the services like GetTaxi have become a commodity already. People definitely understand why it’s so convenient,' says Waiser. Growth in Israel is tracking at 100%, and Waiser has bigger plans in store. The GetTaxi app is available for free on, and (the only taxi-ordering app on the platform). In one year, GetTaxi has reached a point of saturation — it only takes three minutes to get a taxi in Israel.

And when a service you typically only use to get to the airport proves to be habitually convenient, riders tend to rely on the service even more. 'You start to think, 'Why should I use my private car today if I can use GetTaxi to take me from meeting to meeting?' ' says Waiser. 'It's more convenient than using my own car. I can click a button and have a cab before I walk out the door.'

' Plus, you don't have to (a major task in some cities), stop at the gas station (a suck on your time and your wallet) or worry about wasting time driving, since you can work in the cab. In fact, every cab in the Moscow network is equipped with 4G Wi-Fi. And as we move toward more sustainable transport options, it's important to think about taxi efficiency, or lack thereof. Typically, a cab drives four idle miles between orders. With a queue of waiting passengers that are geolocated, taxi services are more efficient. The same number of taxis can take on more jobs and transport more passengers. This is boon for cities trying to improve urban mobility and improve sustainability practices.

In addition to improving efficiency and making cab-hailing a more safe and secure pratice, GPS-enabled taxi apps make cities more navigable for tourists, who might not know the best places to hail a taxi or the direction to take when they actually get one. If all the user has to do is enable GPS and tap a button to request a cab, the experience becomes seamless and requires little understanding of a city's geography. Waisar wants GetTaxi available in every metro city around the world from a single app, enabling city dwellers and tourists to call a cab with the click of a button.

It's a move that will benefit cab seekers, cab drivers and cities alike. 'In five years, the taxi experience won't look anything like it does today,' Jing Wang Herman, CEO of GetTaxi USA,.

Uber While GetTaxi is reinventing the taxi industry, is on a hunt to become your go-to private driver. A free app for and, lets you drop a pin and request private car service in 14 major cities, including San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago (you can also request a car via SMS or the mobile website, ). Uber fares are higher than in standard taxis, but the experience is admittedly more high-end (plus, come September, so the difference won't be as major). Like GetTaxi, Uber enables mobile payments (and includes tip in the fare), so all users have to do is jump in and out of the car — the app handles all the details.
